Days are getting shorter, coats starting to blow, and temps are getting that little bit cooler at night - Winter is just around the corner! You may be starting to ask yourself - "what rug do I need to keep my horse cosy & warm this Winter?"

There are many variables to consider - if your horse is stabled, paddocked, in work, clipped, aged, unwell, where you live - just to name a few, and in each circumstance you know your horse best. Here at Gala Equine, we love our Kersey wool horse rugs for their versatility and comfort, and we know you will too!

Gala Equine wool horse rugs are made from thick, high-quality, luxurious Kersey Wool that is natural, renewable, and wrinkle-resistant. At 700gsm, our wool horse rugs outperform competitors woollens and synthetics in every area - durability, comfort, warmth and breathability - giving you and your horse a quality rug that will last many seasons to come.

WOOL IS A NATURAL FIBRE

Wool is one of Mother Nature's great wonders - a natural fibre perfectly in balance with lots of benefits.

One of wools best qualities is its unmatched breathability. Wool is breathable down to it's very core, in and of itself. Unlike synthetic fibres, such as fleece, that are only breathable through pores in between fibres. This breathability assists thermoregulation, keeping your horse comfortable in a wide range of conditions. This is how wool manages to be warm when it needs to be, while also being cold when it needs to be.

IT HAS A MAGICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH WATER

The cortex of wool fibres absorb moisture, while the epicuticle scales on the outside of the fibre are hydrophobic - which is actually something quite amazing, because it allows wool to simultaneously absorb moisture from your horse and draw it away from their skin, while still resisting external moisture like rain or snow. This is why some chilly mornings you might see frost on the outside of the rug, but underneath, your horse is dry and warm!

Great as an Under Rug or Top Layer

Depending on your needs, you can easily layer Gala Equine's wools to get the warmth you require. They also work wonderfully underneath a turnout, doona, or rain sheet as needed, acting as an excellent insulator. Our hot tip for stabled horses - put a cotton over the top of your wool horse rug to protect it from those pesky shavings!

Caring for your Wool Horse Rug

Wool is highly odour resistant due to its natural, anti-microbial properties that don’t allow bacteria to bind and subsequently grow on the fibres in the fabric, so unless it is heavily soiled, a good airing is generally all that is needed. When you do need to wash, make sure you brush off any debris or dried mud that might be in the fibres and wash in a cool or lukewarm water cycle, then reshape and lay flat or hang gently to dry.

Thanks to its versatility, warmth & quality, we recommend including wool horse rugs in your horses winter wardrobe. With proper care, they will last seasons to come!

Always keep your horse's well-being in mind, and check as often as possible on their comfort when they’re rugged.
